I’ve had SimpliSafe for a few years with the basic monitoring plan and it’s been good so far. The app is easy to use, and I’ve mostly just set up door/window sensors and an indoor camera.
The one time the alarm went off, they called me right away, which gave me confidence in their response time. I haven’t added outdoor cameras or a doorbell cam yet, but I’m considering it.
Do they have outdoor cameras and direct 911 calls?

I had a false alarm once. They called my wife, then my sister, and then sent the fire department. They had my contact info wrong, which was annoying. But I stayed with SimpliSafe since I didn’t find anything better.
I set up three Arlo cameras in September and they’re still running on the first charge. It’s decent for the price. We also have a Ring doorbell, and I’ve found the app and connection much better with Ring than Arlo.

I know this gets asked all the time, but what do you guys think is the best home security system in 2024, especially for video and automatic 911 calls? I’ve heard Vivint and SimpliSafe are not great anymore. ADT seems old-fashioned and has a lot of negative feedback too.
Eufy seems to be the popular choice lately. What do you all think?
I’m using Eufy, and it’s been great. Video is stored locally on my network, and I don’t pay any subscriptions. I’d definitely recommend it.

Do they offer monitoring and alert services with 911 calls?

Ubiquiti is the best if you value privacy. It’s more expensive, but the convenience and smart features are well worth it.

I work in home security, and it’s common practice not to contact authorities right away. Most places require contacting two people before calling the police or fire department, especially to avoid false alarms.

My Eufy system stopped recording video after less than a year, and customer support was no help. Your experience may vary, though.

Do you mean it only records clips instead of continuous footage?

I’m glad this came up! I recently bought a house in a less-than-ideal area, and I’m deciding between Ring and SimpliSafe because I want a direct connection to the police and easy setup. Neither seems perfect, so I’m looking forward to what people have to say.

Is it true that SimpliSafe has a direct line to 911?

I went with Ring for several reasons:
Everything works in one app: alarm, cameras, doorbell.
Easy to install. I set up the system in about 30 minutes, and the doorbell took another 45 minutes.
Affordable. We couldn’t buy everything upfront, but adding more parts later was simple. Most of it is available at Lowe’s.
Monitoring is cheap, about $200 a year, and covers burglary, fire, and video storage.
They even have outdoor sensors, which I plan to add when we get a dog.

It’s been a good experience so far.
Does Ring connect to 911 for emergencies?
With a monitoring plan, it connects to a monitoring center first. If they can’t reach you, they’ll send emergency services. So it doesn’t immediately call 911, but it’s pretty close. They also have panic buttons for police, fire, and EMS.

Honestly, a .45 or .357 makes for great home security too.

For professionally monitored systems, I’d go with a tried and true option like Honeywell Vista or DSC. They might feel old-school, but they’re reliable and still widely used.

I use Vivint, and it’s been pretty solid. I know some people don’t like them, but I’ve had no issues.

I’m a mostly satisfied Vivint customer too. Why do people dislike them?
