I know this gets asked all the time, but what do you guys think is the best home security system in 2024, especially for video and automatic 911 calls? I’ve heard Vivint and SimpliSafe are not great anymore. ADT seems old-fashioned and has a lot of negative feedback too.
Eufy seems to be the popular choice lately. What do you all think?
Eufy is definitely strong in some areas, but I’d recommend checking out comparison sites. When I was choosing, I found a local security system that fit my needs better.
Sometimes we get stuck on the big brand names, but comparing local prices and services made a big difference for me. Might be worth looking into if you’re still deciding.
I work in the commercial surveillance industry, but my team often discusses home setups. Wyze is a great option if you don’t want the hassle of setting up a wired system. They’ve got the lowest subscription rates and a wide range of smart home products. You can even use it without a subscription if you use SD cards, though some features are limited.
Eufy is okay but has some security issues and hit-or-miss products. If you’re looking for something reliable without a subscription, Lorex and Reolink are also good choices, especially if you don’t mind simpler interfaces.

I’m about to close on a house in a few days. Why do people say SimpliSafe is bad now?

I didn’t say it’s bad, just that it’s more of an alarm system than a video-focused solution like Wyze. SimpliSafe has its strengths but focuses less on AI and smart features.

Oops, I meant to ask the person who posted this! Thanks for your helpful info, though.

I’ve just heard bad things from my friends. Maybe it’s because they advertise a lot on podcasts?

Thanks for your perspective as someone in the industry! I’d love to hear your thoughts on Ring vs. Wyze. I have big dogs, so surprises aren’t too common, but I worry about someone breaking in when I’m not home. I like the idea of door/window sensors and monitoring but don’t know if it’s worth it or just a false sense of security. Wyze seems to have better cameras, but no monitoring.
I’m considering combining both, especially with some Costco sales I’ve seen.

I’d probably go with Ring or Ubiquiti. Eufy and Arlo are solid too and usually more affordable.
I recommend Ring. It’s easy to install, and their monthly plan is just $10, which includes monitoring and video storage.
Be cautious with Ring. Police departments can access your video feed without your knowledge.
Ring has stated that as of 2024, they won’t give law enforcement access without a warrant or owner’s consent, except in emergencies. Police can’t view your footage unless you share it or post it to their Neighbors App.

“Without a warrant” doesn’t mean much. Police can get one pretty easily.

I think you’re talking about Ubiquiti, not Ubiquity. They don’t do security systems, just cameras and networking gear. The problem with Ring is that it doesn’t always record when it should. Ubiquiti cameras record 24/7 if there’s power, and you can pair it with another security system like SimpliSafe for full coverage.

Ubiquiti does security cameras and they’re way better than Ring. They don’t auto-call 911, but they have people, animal, package, and license plate detection. Ring is basically consumer spyware that gives access to police departments.
I’ve had SimpliSafe for a few years with the basic monitoring plan and it’s been good so far. The app is easy to use, and I’ve mostly just set up door/window sensors and an indoor camera.
The one time the alarm went off, they called me right away, which gave me confidence in their response time. I haven’t added outdoor cameras or a doorbell cam yet, but I’m considering it.

Do they have outdoor cameras and direct 911 calls?
