Good morning! Just wanted to remind everyone to get their home defense in place. Had someone try to break into my and my wife’s car last night. Thankfully, my security system worked as it should. I’m relieved I stayed up late setting it all up. I never thought something like this would happen out here in the country, but I kept thinking ‘what if’…
Living in the country often gives a false sense of security. There are more ways to sneak around without being noticed. Less people around to spot any strange activity. Most people in rural areas don’t take security seriously, which makes them more vulnerable. The police might be farther away, and there are fewer jobs, so desperation leads some people to crime. Sure, bigger crimes might happen more in the cities, but in rural areas, it’s not uncommon for someone to steal stuff to pawn. Glad your security measures worked!
Had my truck cleaned out Sunday night. I’ve been putting off updating my system, but ordered everything yesterday. Don’t wait like I did. Oh, and I’m also in NC.

What did you order? What are your plans?
@Geoffrey
Unifi cameras with tracking. Also adding a hue motion sensor flood and an outdoor speaker to make some noise and scare them off. These guys are fast, they don’t stick around for more than a minute, so automation is key. I’m also thinking about adding an LPR in my mailbox to trigger if something happens, but not sure I can afford two of them to cover both directions. It’s crazy, the stuff they took would’ve paid for another camera and all the cables. So, you either pay now or pay later.
@George
My lights turned on, and all they did was pause for 5 seconds. What outdoor speaker are you using?

I haven’t decided yet, but I’m leaning toward a wired rock-style outdoor speaker connected to some smart device or an R-pi.
Can you share what you’ve done to secure your place?

A combination of home assistant stuff, Unifi cameras, and IR lights. Hit me up if you want more specifics.

Protecting my family is one of my main goals in life. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep them safe, even if it means putting myself in danger.

He got away about half a second before I could catch up. I hate that he missed out on the party.

So, what would you have done if you had confronted the person? Just curious.
@Micah
I was going to defend my property and my family.

So, you would’ve risked your life for property? I get it, just curious. I mean, you said your vehicles were being broken into, but no one was trying to kick down your door or anything. I’m not criticizing, but maybe setting off an alarm could have scared them off instead of confronting them?
@Micah
That’s the most optimistic view I’ve heard of an intruder. Let me explain:
- How do I know he was only stealing from my vehicles? I had no clue where he was headed next.
- Do I wait for him to kick in my door before defending my family? If he does that, my family could be in serious danger.
- I do agree an alarm is a good idea, but it wasn’t an option for me at the time. I had to make do with what I had.
- My question to you: At what point would you decide to intervene?
@Geoffrey
Confronting them directly outside is probably the least effective tactic you can take.

You would need to know my property to make that judgment. I have a hot tub and plenty of places to hide.
@Geoffrey
Deterrence works. If they’re going through your car, setting off a house alarm will probably be enough. They won’t come back. But if you’re out on 15 acres with no perimeter triggers, it’s worth considering. That way, you can be ready for them instead of the other way around. I know police response times might be slow, and you probably don’t have neighbors to scare them off, so it’s a different situation. Motion sensors at your property’s entry points could be key.
