hey everyone, i’m on the lookout for IP cameras that can store directly to a NAS, ideally with a good web interface and POE support. my current setup has some older Amcrest POE cameras, but the web interface only works on Internet Explorer and Safari, and it’s pretty buggy. plus, it won’t connect to my NAS through FTP. i managed to log in with FTP directly, so i’m not sure what the issue is. any camera recommendations that might work better?
just a thought—could you set up a lightweight NVR as a VM to handle the recording to your NAS? most POE cameras support RTSP or other streaming protocols.

you could try Frigate. with a Coral TPU, Frigate can handle multiple cameras, even on a Pi or small NUC. dahua is a solid brand for budget-friendly cameras (Amcrest, Loryta, and EmpireTech are dahua rebrands). remember, sensor size matters more than megapixels. also, the Lens Calculator can help you compare different lens options.
@Jerry
getting a Coral is near impossible right now.

i’ve used BlueIris for 24/7, and Frigate for notifications. setup includes 2 Amcrest 4MP doorbells, 7 Dahua cameras, and 2 wireless Amcrest cameras—it works great for my parents’ place.

last year, i got a mini PCI Coral and used an adapter to fit it into a standard slot on my NAS.

it took about 8 months for my Coral to ship; i missed out on a few batches.
been through this—tried DIY setups, ZoneMinder, iSpy, and eventually went with Blue Iris. if you’re tired of troubleshooting, just go with BI. it polls cameras automatically to find the right config.
@StatSleuth4
can BI be installed on a linux container? do i need to buy a windows license to run it on a VM?

the ios app for Blue Iris isn’t great, though.
@Mickey
the web UI works fine on most devices.
@Mickey
apple isn’t for me.
i have an Amcrest 4K camera with on-camera object detection. it stores motion-detected footage on my home server via FTP and also supports NFS.
lots of low-quality cameras out there, but Axis is solid if you’re willing to spend a bit.
i’m trying a camera from FS.com, around 70€, POE included. fingers crossed!
