I have a bunch of Wyze cameras but like to keep some variety in my setup. Recently, I decided to try a Tapo camera after all the hype, and I have to say—I was pretty disappointed.
The motion detection on the Tapo C425 (battery-powered) was unreliable, even after going through setup and troubleshooting. Its detection range was maybe 10-15 feet, which is significantly lower than I expected. I had a Ring Stick Up Cam in the same spot on the same network, and the difference in detection was night and day.
I know Tapo has a great reputation, so maybe it’s just their battery-powered models that struggle. Several others have mentioned that their wired models are excellent.
Has anyone had a better experience with Tapo’s wired cameras? Or maybe another battery-powered brand that could be a better alternative? I’m considering Reolink next.
I have a few Tapo C320WS and C210 units, and they’ve worked great for me. I replaced several Wyze units with them. But I haven’t used their battery-powered cameras, so I can’t speak on those.

Yeah, seems like the battery models are the weak point. I was hoping for a sub-free alternative to my Ring, but the detection just isn’t reliable.
I had the same issue with Tapo’s battery cameras. Their wired ones are great, but the C425 was a huge letdown. If you’re looking for another battery option, you might want to try Reolink Argus.

Appreciate the recommendation! I think I’ll go that route next.
I switched all my Wyze cams to Tapo C120s, and they’ve been great. The motion detection is spot on. But again, mine are wired, so maybe that’s where the difference is.
I’ve had the opposite experience—Tapo’s wired cameras outshine Wyze in every way. No SD card failures either. But I haven’t tried their battery-powered models.
