Why does Wyze label animals wrong? Can't we fix this?

Why doesn’t Wyze let me update what the camera is actually seeing? It keeps calling foxes, deer, and raccoons ‘pets’. Sometimes bugs flying by get labeled as ‘people’. Wouldn’t it make more sense if users could correct the labels so the AI learns and gets better over time?

If users could set their own categories, there would probably be thousands of different ones, making it messy and hard for the AI to actually work. It would also be tough for the app to manage.

A better way would be for Wyze to get feedback from users and refine their system based on that. But they aren’t great at taking user feedback, to say the least. Once an AI model is trained on certain categories, changing it isn’t easy or cheap.

You should be glad the AI isn’t calling every four-legged animal a person.

Wyze’s detection isn’t accurate enough to add more categories yet. If they ever get to 98-99% accuracy, then maybe they could break things down further. But that’s probably never happening.

They actually do have something similar now, but it’s locked behind a $200 per year subscription called Descriptive Alerts.

It’s a big step up. It can identify my cat, raccoons outside, birds (but not the type), my wife’s white Subaru, and more.

Here are some examples (since I can’t post pictures):

“Person in Garage”
A person is seen entering a garage, approaching a white Subaru, and then leaving. The garage has various tools and equipment.

“Fred and Pet”
A person and Fred are talking in a room with a cat on a cat tree and some plants. The person is holding a cup.

Fred is my Friendly Face name.

The problem is you can’t control what kinds of alerts you get. If you turn on notifications, you get everything—no way to filter out pets or vehicles. They are supposedly adding a way to filter these soon, but no idea when.

There have been hints that the quality of Descriptive Alerts will eventually be available on cheaper plans too, but that’s not confirmed.

That said, it’s really useful. When reviewing clips, it gives a quick summary of what happened without watching every second. Funny enough, it once described my garage as ‘cluttered’. I cleaned it a few days later. Stupid AI calling me out like that.
