I got a free Nest thermostat with my solar panels, and I can’t stand it. Now I’m frustrated because I don’t even know how to put my old one back on. All I want is for the heat to stay at 70 degrees. But it keeps shutting off, and I have to turn it up to 72 or 75 just to get it running again. Why is there no way to hold the temperature?
It says it’s supposed to save money, but it’s making me turn up the heat just to keep it comfortable. I just want to get rid of it. Are there any good thermostats that let you set a temperature and actually stay there until YOU decide to change it?
Turn off ‘Learning’, ‘Auto-Schedule’, and ‘Eco’ mode, and it will stop messing with your settings.
Eco mode tries to lower the temperature to save energy when it thinks no one’s home, but that can be annoying if it’s not detecting movement properly. If you disable all of that, you can set a temperature and it will stay there.
I set mine to 68 degrees and it stays there. The only time it changes is if I manually adjust it or if I leave and Eco mode turns on. If you don’t want it changing on its own, just turn off the learning and scheduling features.
Just to clarify—if you set it to 70 degrees, it will turn the heat off when it reaches 70. That’s how thermostats work. The reason you have to turn it up to 72 or 75 is because the room temperature has already dropped below 70. The heat isn’t supposed to stay on all the time at 70; it cycles on and off to maintain it.
Honestly, this sounds like an issue with the way it’s set up. The thermostat isn’t broken, but you need to go into the settings and turn off the smart features if you don’t want them. If you take a little time to adjust everything, you can make it function like a basic thermostat.
It turns off at 70 because it reached the temperature you set. That’s how thermostats work. If you want it to run longer, you have to set it higher, but then your house will go above 70.

The whole point of this thermostat is to try and save money by adjusting the temperature based on your habits.
I get that, but the problem is that the house ends up feeling too cold. Then I have to turn it up to 74 just to get it to warm up again. It shuts off at 70, and it seems like it just assumes the house is fine.

Something isn’t right then, because you should have full control over the temperature. You might want to double-check your settings in the app. If you walk up to it and adjust it by just one degree, it should trigger the heat to turn on.
If nothing else works, try doing a factory reset. Here’s how:
Click on the Nest thermostat to open the menu.
Scroll to ‘Settings’ and select it.
Go all the way to the right and select ‘Reset’.
Confirm the reset, and it will wipe all personal settings.
Then, turn off Eco mode, Learning, and Auto-Schedule. I had the same issue, and resetting was the only thing that finally made it stop changing on its own.

You don’t need to reset it to change the settings. You can turn off all the smart features manually.
I tried that, but mine kept changing the temperature anyway. Someone suggested resetting it, and after that, it finally stopped messing with my settings.
