Just getting started on setting up security cameras. Any tips on where to place them for the best coverage? I want to make sure I don’t miss any important spots.
Here’s my setup:
- Overlapping views for coverage.
- Each camera is in view of at least one other to prevent tampering.
- Extra cameras in the driveway to get a clear view between cars.
- Cameras are mounted close to head level for better facial detail.

Glad it helped! Also, consider battery-powered wifi cameras along the perimeter to catch car plates. It’s hard to get them from inside the house, but you can place small cams like Blinks in trees or bushes. Make sure to cover front and back plates since headlights can wash out the view at night.
How many cameras are you thinking of getting?

Haven’t purchased any yet, still planning it out.

I ended up with enough to cover my front and back yards, plus extra ones near the doors and windows for better detail.
Don’t forget to cover windows and other entry points. Also, check the field of view for each camera model. That way, you can set them up to cover each other and avoid blind spots.

Good advice. I’m mostly focused on main entry points but will keep this in mind.
I’ve added a picture of the layout. Planning to install a doorbell camera too.
Quick tips:
Cover paths to the backyard, front door, and driveway if you park there.
A camera near the back door helps too, even if other cameras can catch the area.
Since you’re adding a doorbell cam, that’ll cover the door itself. I’d also put one on the bottom corner of the garage facing the driveway and walkway.
With this setup, you could get by with just 3 cameras: one on each side, one on the garage (plus the doorbell cam). Maybe add one more near the back door.
But what’s your main goal? Do you want to spot someone before they get in, or just have evidence if something goes wrong?
For reference, my cameras serve as a deterrent (they light up when they detect movement) and give me footage if anything happens when I’m not around.
