When’s the best time to buy Lorex cameras?

I’m in the middle of building a house and have decided on installing Lorex cameras once it’s done. The house won’t be ready until the first half of 2024, but I’m wondering when the best time of year is to get the biggest discount on a system. I live in Canada, if that matters. Any advice?

Boxing Day usually has some good deals (it did in 2022). If you’re looking at Costco, they have good prices, but be aware that the NVR model they sell is a generation older and doesn’t run the newest software. Also, their cheaper system is a DVR, not an NVR, so double-check which one you’re getting. Lorex.ca also hinted at new 4K+ 12MP cameras coming in July 2023, so if you’re into the latest tech, you might want to wait until Boxing Day 2024 for those. If you’re happy with current models, you can snag a deal this Boxing Day.

Sign up for their marketing emails, and you’ll see that their systems are always on sale. They’ve been running ‘50% off this week only!’ deals for the last three years. So don’t feel pressured to buy right away—there’s always another sale around the corner.

Just a heads-up, the app they provide is terrible. I have the 8-camera 4K wired system, and while the cameras are great on-site, trying to view live video remotely through the app is a nightmare. It freezes, lags, and skips video. If you’re thinking about connecting it to Google Home, I wouldn’t get my hopes up. I haven’t tried that, but given the app’s issues, I’m not optimistic. If you want a good Google Home-compatible system, I’d suggest looking elsewhere.

Thanks for the heads-up! What exactly makes the app so bad? Does it just not connect properly, or does it lag? Also, do you have any other system recommendations? I’m looking for something that works well with Google Home, but I haven’t seen many options.

It connects fine, but the video skips, lags, and freezes a lot, and you end up missing big chunks of footage. I haven’t tried linking it to Google Home, but based on the app performance, I wouldn’t expect much. I actually had a much cheaper Chinese brand system that worked better on the app side. I just bought another system from Home Depot to test out and compare, but if the app is as bad as Lorex, I’m going back to that Chinese brand. If you want, I’ll update you once I’ve tested the Home Depot system and find out which brand worked better.

Yes, please keep me posted! And let me know the name of that Chinese brand if you remember. I still have time before I need to decide, so I’d appreciate any recommendations.

Sure thing! The new system I’m testing is by GW Security. I’ll set everything up this week to test the app. I’ll also dig out my old 4-camera wireless system and let you know the brand. I’m pretty sure they also make wired systems, so I’ll keep you posted.

@Stella I haven’t forgotten about you! I’ve set up the new system, and now I just need to download the app and test it. I’ll let you know in a few days how it goes.

Hey, I’ve been testing the system. Unfortunately, the app is laggy just like the Lorex one. I’m starting to think the issue might be with my internet. I’m going to check with some IT people at work and dig deeper. I’ll keep you posted if I figure it out.

Thanks for the update! Just to clarify, is this the Home Depot system or the Chinese brand system that’s lagging?

This is the GW Security system from Home Depot. I still need to find my old wireless cameras from the Chinese brand. I’ll dig through my shop and find them soon so I can test those as well. I’ll let you know once I have more info.

Which app are you referring to? Lorex has several apps—Lorex, Lorex Home, Lorex Cloud, and Lorex Pro. They all work a bit differently.

I got my system during a big 4th of July sale last year. I don’t remember the exact discount, but it was a pretty good deal. I think that could be a good option if you want to buy soon.

The house won’t be ready until next year, so I’m thinking about waiting for a sale. I was considering Boxing Day, Black Friday, or the July 1st/4th sales.
