What’s the best way to get privacy but still let light in?

I just moved into a first-floor apartment, and my living room and bedroom windows face the sidewalk. If I open my blinds or curtains, anyone walking by can see right in. I want to enjoy the daylight and the view without feeling like I’m on display.

I’ve been thinking about using mirrored window film, but I don’t like the bluish tint those films usually have. I’d prefer something with a warmer tone or very little tint. Does anyone know of a good option? And do these films actually stay in place?

I figured this forum would give me more help than the quieter window film communities. Appreciate any tips!

Remember, those mirrored films only work when it’s brighter outside than inside. At night, people will be able to see right in.

Have you thought about frosted films? They’re usually made for bathrooms, but they might work. Just know that mirrored films only work during the day. At night, the effect flips.

I do like the look of frosted glass, but I’d still want to see outside. Maybe I could frost just the bottom half? My dog loves sitting by the window and watching the world go by, though, so I don’t want to block his view.

If seeing outside is important, maybe try a mix of mirror film for daytime and curtains for night. Decorative films might also be worth checking out. They often look better and hold up better than the cheap options online. Some even come with samples so you can test them out first.

You could try cellular blinds that open from the top. That way, you can let in light but still keep some privacy. Sheer curtains are another option—they let in light while making it harder to see inside.

I’m definitely going to use sheer curtains, but I’ve already picked black ones for the look I’m going for. The problem is, they block a lot of light. I’d like to open them fully during the day without worrying about anyone seeing me if I’m walking around in my pajamas. I know I make things more complicated than they need to be.

High-quality films, like the ones made by 3M, don’t usually have a blue or warm tint. They might be a good option for you.

I got some cheap stuff off Amazon with a geometric pattern. It makes the sunlight sparkle inside, and it was only about $8 a roll. Totally worth it.

In my old apartment, I used white crinkle sheers. They’re gauzy and provide good privacy. Someone would have to stand really close to see anything. For nighttime, I just closed my curtains.

I’ve been searching for window film too. If you check Amazon, there are lots of options in different colors besides the blue or gray ones.

Do you remember what brand you bought? I’ve had mixed results before. One kind fell off immediately, and the other stuck perfectly. The one that worked was frosted, though, and I want something clear for the living room.

A privacy screen might work for you. It’s like a thicker mesh that makes it hard to see through from either side. It won’t keep anyone out, but it does give some privacy.
