What do you all think of my home defense layers?

Someone recently described their home defense plan as an onion with layers of protection, so I thought I’d share mine. Hoping it sparks a good discussion and maybe helps someone out!

Layer 1: Static Lights
We keep the house and yard well-lit with about 20 solar lights scattered around. They light up the house and some big trees in the yard. It makes the place look nice at night and helps deter anyone who might think about breaking in.

Layer 2: Motion Lights and Cameras
Every entry point has a Nest floodlight camera, and we’ve got a Nest doorbell too. These are handy for everyday things like deliveries or checking on the dogs. On the house corners, we added motion-activated floodlights to scare off anyone lurking around. Cameras also help if you need to file a police report later.

Layer 3: Locks and Door Hardware
All doors, including the garage one, have deadbolts that stay locked. At night, we lock the handles and flip these door stops. A cop friend told me intruders should feel resistance at the first touch, so we do this for extra security. We also replaced the standard hinge screws with longer ones for better durability.

Layer 4: Alarm System
We use ADT’s Total Safety package since it came with the house. It has sensors on all windows and doors, including the garage. We proudly display ADT signs and stickers to let people know we’re protected. Plus, our two big dogs in the living room add another layer of security.

Layer 5(.56): Personal Protection
If all else fails and someone breaks in, we have a plan. We’ve practiced this with the kids like a fire drill. If the alarm goes off, we gather in our safe spot and defend ourselves until help arrives. No playing hero—just keeping everyone safe.

Extra Safety Tips

  • Watch for cars following you, especially after errands like going to the bank. Thieves sometimes follow people home.
  • Don’t open the door unless you’re expecting someone. That’s what the video doorbell is for.
  • Be cautious about what you throw out. Big TV boxes at the curb can attract thieves.
  • Use a locking mailbox. It’s shocking how much info someone can get from stolen mail.
  • Get to know your neighbors! They’re great for keeping an eye out when you’re not home.

My dad always said the best defense is avoiding trouble altogether. Most of this is about making our home less attractive to potential criminals. I hope something here is helpful, and I’d love to hear what others are doing!

This is great advice! Bookmarking this post. Greetings from Newfoundland.

Your setup sounds pretty solid. I’d add motion sensors outside windows and in the backyard, connected to a loud alarm.

By the way, how long have your solar lights lasted? Most I’ve tried die within a week or two.

@Davis
We’ve had these for about two months. We tried cheaper ones first, but they didn’t hold up. These are still working, except for a couple that the kids accidentally broke.

That’s good to know. Thanks for sharing!

Think about adding more layers further out, like fences or gates in the yard, and getting to know your neighbors better.

ADT charges way too much, and their response times aren’t great. Police usually respond slower when a security company calls them.

You should think about swapping out the Nest cameras for wired ones. Wi-Fi systems are easy to disrupt with jammers, and thieves are starting to use those more often.

Your plan is impressive! Mine’s much simpler:

Layer 0: Live in a safe city. There hasn’t been a home invasion here in over 10 years.
