Hi everyone, I am new to home security and planning some changes to my home. I want to understand the best practices for setting up a secure home, like where to place cameras, what kinds of sensors to get, and how to layer defenses. I prefer books because they are detailed and easy to go back to, but I’m open to other suggestions as well.
For improving exterior security, here are some ideas:
-
First, focus on making your home less appealing to burglars and buying time if someone is determined to get in. Landscaping is a good starting point. Keep windows and doors clear of shrubs or anything that gives intruders a place to hide.
-
Reinforce ground-floor windows and entry doors. If you can, invest in hurricane-rated glass, especially for doors with side panels. If that’s too expensive, security film from brands like 3M can make windows harder to break. Also, upgrade your doors with solid materials like steel and strong locks. Avoid smart locks for now. Sliding glass doors are a common weak point, so consider replacing them.
-
For garage doors, use a small cable tie on the emergency pull cord to make it harder to open from outside. If you’ve just moved in, change the remote codes.
-
Install outdoor cameras. I use hardwired ones connected to a DVR in a secure room, which can’t be accessed remotely. Even if you don’t have a monitored system, get some signs or stickers to make it look like you do.
-
Driveway sensors can be very useful. I recommend Dakota Alert’s buried magnet sensor, which alerts me when a car comes or goes. It’s reliable, unlike motion sensors that often give false alarms.
-
Hide or secure your utility connections so they’re not easy to tamper with.
-
Consider a package drop box near your mailbox to keep deliveries safe and away from your doorstep.
These are some basics. Let me know your layout or specific concerns, and I can suggest more ideas.
