Weird car shining a flashlight at my door early in the morning… twice?

About three months ago, my video doorbell caught a car coming up my driveway at 3:30 in the morning. The driver rolled down the window and pointed a flashlight at my front door and camera. This seemed strange—definitely not a food delivery or anything like that at that hour. I thought maybe they were looking for a lost pet, but why aim the flashlight right at the door? I ended up brushing it off.

Then, three months later, it happened again, but this time at 5:50 am. Same car. They drove up the driveway, shined a flashlight at my door, and instead of reversing, they drove across my front yard. I’m sure it’s the same vehicle. I reported this to the police, and they’ve said they’ll patrol the area and keep an eye out for this car.

What do you all think is going on here? And what steps should I take to keep my home safe?

I’d recommend adding more cameras, especially ones that cover different angles of your property. That way, a flashlight won’t be able to block everything.

I used to deliver newspapers early in the morning, and sometimes I had trouble finding house numbers in the dark. It could be something innocent like that, but it’s good to stay cautious.

Maybe it’s a lazy Amazon Flex driver trying to find the address?

I’ve seen Amazon drivers or other delivery people shining flashlights to figure out where they’re going, especially super early in the morning. It might be worth considering that possibility.

ETA: u/654456 mentioned it too—Amazon Flex contractors.

That’s a good point, but what threw me off is that instead of just reversing, the person decided to drive through my front yard. That part makes no sense to me.

Fair point. Could just be a careless or clueless driver, though. Some of the people they hire for those jobs aren’t exactly the most careful. Not to knock all of them, but overnight gigs tend to be less picky with hires.

The fact that they drove through your yard makes this really suspicious. Could they have been looking for something like an air tag on the property? That behavior is odd.

Everyone should have an LPR camera, honestly. They’re more useful than regular security cams for stuff like this. People might wear masks, but they’re often dumb enough to use their actual license plates.
