Here is a sketch of my kitchen. I want to add LED strip lighting under all four cabinets with these requirements:
An easy on/off switch like a normal light
Option to control through an app or Alexa
A dimmer would be nice but not essential
My problem is one cabinet is isolated. How do I power and control it?
I can add outlets above the cabinets and store the power supply on top. Installing two power supplies is fine, but can I control both with one switch?
My plan is:
Replace the 2nd outlet with a smart switch
Install a new outlet above the cabinet for power
Run low voltage wire under the sink and behind the dishwasher to the far right cabinet (difficult but manageable)
I am unsure if a smart switch powering an outlet will work for this, so I need product recommendations. Also, is there a better way to hide low-voltage wire around plumbing?
Setting Up Smart Switches for LED Strip Lights: A Comprehensive Guide
Using a smart switch is a great way to control your LED strip lights efficiently. Here are some additional considerations and steps to ensure a successful setup:
Additional Considerations
Power Supply: Opt for a single, reliable power supply instead of multiple ones for convenience and aesthetics.
Wire Routing: Concealing low-voltage wires can be tricky; consider using wire channels or molding for a cleaner look.
Smart Switch Compatibility: Ensure the smart switch you select is compatible with the LED strip lights you intend to use.
Recommended Products
LED Strip Lights: Choose a high-quality, dimmable LED strip with adhesive backing for easy installation, such as Govee, Philips Hue, or LIFX.
Power Supply: Select a reliable 12V or 24V power supply based on your LED strip’s requirements.
Smart Switch: Opt for a Wi-Fi enabled smart switch like TP-Link Kasa or Lutron Caseta for seamless control.
Wire Concealers: Use plastic wire channels or molding to hide wires discreetly along surfaces.
Installation Steps
Plan the Layout: Determine the length and placement of LED strips under each cabinet and plan wire routing accordingly.
Install the Smart Switch: Replace the existing outlet with the smart switch, ensuring compatibility with your LED setup.
Run the Power Cable: Connect the power supply to the smart switch and route the cable neatly to the first cabinet.
Install LED Strips: Attach the LED strips securely under cabinets using the adhesive backing, ensuring even placement.
Connect LED Strips: Follow manufacturer instructions to connect the LED strips to the power supply correctly.
Manage Wires: Use wire channels or molding to conceal wires along countertops and behind appliances for a tidy finish.
Test the System: Power up the setup and test functionality of both the LED strips and smart switch for proper operation.
Additional Tips
Consider a Controller: Some LED strips come with remote controls or app-based controllers for added convenience.
Color Options: For color-changing LED strips, ensure your smart switch or controller supports RGB or RGBW options.
Professional Installation: If you’re uncertain about electrical work, consider hiring a professional electrician for installation.
