I am blown away by all the things I didn’t know before reading the posts here. This forum is amazing, and I am learning so much. I am really grateful for what you all are teaching me, especially things like high-security locks with locks on both sides instead of just a thumb lock inside, or how to reinforce the latch on a jamb. All of this makes so much sense, but I only get it now that I’ve learned about them. I don’t think many people know about these great solutions!
Are there other dedicated forums out there where the serious folks hang out and go into more detail?

I wouldn’t really call this a gold mine because there’s a lot of bad advice mixed in with the good. But yes, there is some really good advice here.
You’re right, there is a lot of bad advice mixed in, but there are also real nuggets of wisdom that have been game-changers for me. It’s like looking for gold—you run into a lot of garbage, but there are some real gems hidden in there.
Now, I’m wondering if there are other forums where people get into this stuff in more detail and where there are fewer bad ideas. I’m looking for more good info and less noise.
I’d even be willing to answer questions like:
-
‘Is it smart to leave your car windows unlocked so thieves move on because there’s nothing inside to steal?’
-
‘What about wiring a 3000dB airhorn to a trip alarm, so it wakes everyone in the neighborhood and your neighbors can help detain the intruder until the cops arrive?’
-
‘Should you use flashing, disco-style light cameras that clearly advertise their presence and scare off intruders?’
There are people here who actually believe in stuff like this and feel pretty good about it too. It’s wild.

None of those ideas would really work well, no matter what the noise or light rules are.

You shouldn’t leave your car windows unlocked just to try to keep thieves from breaking in.

A 3000dB airhorn on a trip alarm would wake up your whole neighborhood and make people mad. You might end up with broken windows from your neighbors who are angry you woke their baby up or interrupted their meeting.

The flashy disco light cameras might just encourage intruders to cover the cameras with a hoodie or spray paint.
These ideas might seem fine to some people, but they show a lack of understanding about real security.
