Switching from Ring to Eufy… worth it?

Hi everyone,

Recently, we were notified that Ring will be changing their protect plans, and our current plan will no longer include professional monitoring—the main reason we chose Ring in the first place. Right now, we have 1 wired doorbell, 1 floodlight cam, 14 door/window sensors, and 1 motion detector. Unfortunately, we’ll need to keep the standard plan, which is $150/year, because the basic or no-subscription plan doesn’t allow for arm/disarm from the app. We also like having cellular backup in case the WiFi goes out, although we won’t be paying for the professional monitoring add-on. We’re based in Canada.

We only bought the Ring system in June 2023, so we’re not happy about this change. I’ve been looking into self-monitoring options with local storage, and Eufy seems like our best option since we can’t use PoE in our home.

Switching to Eufy would cost around $1500 CAD to replace our current system. Do you think this switch is worth it? Without an Eufy subscription, it would take 8-9 years to break even on the cost. Are there any other self-monitoring options with local storage that we should consider?

Thanks in advance for your help!

As someone currently using Eufy, I’m somewhat dissatisfied with the overall performance, especially the bionic AI face detection on the HomeBase 3.

If I could do it again, or if I were to suggest something to others, I’d recommend getting a PoE system like Reolink or Unifi if possible.

@Raegan
Reolink seems to be highly recommended, but I don’t think I can do PoE in my current home without significant work.

I recently installed a Eufy setup with the HomeBase 3, and I plan to add a couple more cameras over time.

Here’s my system:

  • HomeBase 3 with 1TB storage
  • 2 solar/battery-powered S220 cameras
  • 2 solar/battery-powered 2C cameras (these let me position the solar panel separately from the camera)
  • 2 E220 indoor cameras
  • 1 dual video doorbell camera

The AI features are decent but nothing groundbreaking. Honestly, the alerts can be just as annoying as Ring’s. I thought about getting the floodlight cams, but the lights are too bright and would bother my neighbors.

However, the night vision on the 2K cameras is better than Ring’s, in my opinion.
