Someone tried to break in last night … how did they cause this damage to our garage door?

Last night, I heard some noises and woke up my fiancée to check. Someone was trying to break into our garage and side door. I’m just trying to figure out how they caused this damage to our garage door. Anyone know how they could have done this?

Could have used a cordless grinder with a cutting wheel.

Most thieves don’t have that kind of equipment. Likely they used a crowbar, pry bar, or maybe a hammer with a pry bar, or a flathead screwdriver.

We found a knife near the scene with a bit of the garage door on the ground… surprised they could cut it so cleanly with a rusty old knife.

They probably pried it open, and it broke in half.

Could it have been a crowbar?

Hmm, not really. It looks like a clean cut.

There’s bent metal on the left side. Two outward scrapes too. Likely from a tool sliding out of the hole they were trying to make. The broken part looks like metal snapped from bending.

Metal can snap pretty cleanly.

They probably didn’t know what they were doing. They broke part of the slide gate latching, and then used brute force to bend it until it snapped. This is one issue with exposed locking systems. If you have a side door entry, consider locking the garage door from the inside and removing the external locking system. That way, when they try the door and find it locked, there’s nothing they can mess with, and they’ll just move on.

Ideally, you ask for their password from behind the opening. When they guess wrong, like trying ‘Fidelio’, you can deliver the boiling oil.
