Seeking a WiFi Thermostat for a Heat-Only Boiler System—Easy Install Recommendations?

I have recently upgraded to a Nvidia Shield and encountered issues with mandatory Google account logins, which I find intrusive. I’m searching for alternative streaming devices that allow app downloads and operation without the need for logging into a device-level account like Google, Amazon, or iCloud. Does anyone know of any user-friendly streaming devices that offer privacy and simplicity without these requirements?

Are you trying to avoid the convenience or is it about privacy concerns? If it’s the latter, consider a Roku stick. It’s inexpensive and only requires a Roku account—which you don’t need to keep logging into. Use a disposable email to set it up if it helps keep things separate.

@Trenton
It’s the principle of the thing for me. I don’t see why a device should become non-functional without logging into an account that has nothing to do with its basic functions.

They design it that way to gather and monetize your usage data, unfortunately. It’s inconvenient and potentially risky since it could lead to data breaches.

@Trenton
Exactly, there’s absolutely no benefit to the user in such setups. It’s frustrating.

Always remember, if you’re not paying for the product, you are the product. That’s why these ‘free’ setups exist.

@Clark
But I did pay, and not just a small amount! Why should I have to compromise my privacy after paying for the hardware?

That’s a valid point. It’s about the ecosystem. Even after buying the hardware, you’re locked into their services and data collection unless you take alternative measures.

@Clark
Hence my search for a less intrusive device. I shouldn’t need to compromise my privacy to use something I bought outright.

You might lose out on some features with an HTPC as it usually involves web-based playback, which doesn’t support 4K or HDR. Why not just set up a dummy Google account?

My HTPC handles 4K HDR without any issues. I use Plex, which supports full quality playback. I’m trying to avoid having to manage another account just to use my device as intended.

Apps need a source for updates and security, which is why these devices require app store logins. You could technically root the Shield and sideload apps, but then you lose out on automatic updates and risk security.

@Ella
True, but it’s a trade-off I’m willing to consider to maintain more control over my data and device usage.

Have you looked into open-source solutions like Jellyfin for media streaming? It might be a more private alternative to commercial streaming devices.

Yes, I use Jellyfin. It’s great for media but doesn’t solve the issue of needing a Google login for the Shield’s basic functionality.
