Renter-friendly security setup ideas when I already have Synology?

I’ve already invested in Synology licenses and have some Reolink POE cameras. But since I’ll be moving to a rental soon, POE cabling outside probably won’t be an option. I’m thinking it might be easier to use a USB-powered setup, maybe from a lightbulb adapter like WYZE offers, instead of running cat5 cables around. So I guess I’m leaning toward WiFi options.

Synology works great for archiving 24/7 footage, but I also want a full security setup with door, window, and motion sensors plus pro monitoring. Ideally, I’d love to have RTSP or ONVIF streams going to Synology while still using a service for person detection and monitoring.

I’ve used WYZE in the past and liked the app and experience, but recent security concerns have me second-guessing cloud storage for footage.

Thanks for any tips!

I keep my cameras and alarm systems separate too, works really well that way. I just set up a DSC NEO alarm system this weekend and I’m happy with it so far. Just need to decide on a monitoring company now. I added an ADC communicator, so there are plenty of monitoring choices.

Since your cameras are already set up, stick with what works for you. Running Cat6 can still be a good option – I’ve done it for wireless APs and cameras in rentals before. If you’re careful with the setup, it stays hidden and landlords don’t usually mind.

@Nicky
DSC sounds promising… does it send notifications to your phone for things like doors or windows opening, or if the alarm gets triggered?

Check out Reolink WiFi cameras – they should support RTSP/ONVIF and work with Synology or any other NVR. For a security system, I’d suggest getting a local alarm.com dealer to set up a Qolsys IQ panel. I wouldn’t go with the DSC Neo myself since it doesn’t play well with third-party smart home systems (at least not easily). The IQ panel or even a Honeywell Vista 20P might be a better fit since you’re already using PoE cameras.
