Nest Protect not working with Netgear Orbi, but fine on another router

My Nest Protects suddenly stopped working with my Netgear Orbi mesh network, and I have no idea why.

I tried everything I could think of, and eventually bought a cheap TP-Link AX15 router. They connected instantly with no issues.

Anyone know what setting or factor could be causing this with the Orbi? Both routers are running a 2.4GHz-only SSID, and I can even have both running at the same time, so interference doesn’t seem like the issue.

They’re all battery-powered, and here’s what I’ve already tried:

  • Swapped batteries
  • Factory reset the devices
  • Disabled AX on 2.4GHz
  • Changed CTS to 2347
  • Tried using a dedicated IoT network
  • Unplugged satellites on the Orbi mesh
  • Created a new home in the app
  • Moved devices closer to the router
  • Moved devices closer to each other

The router may have updated itself, but I’m not sure. No other changes that I can think of. These are Gen 2 units, about 2.5 years old, and they all started dropping connection at the same time.

Do you still get phone notifications when the alarm goes off? From what I remember, Nest Protects (especially the battery ones) don’t need to stay connected to WiFi constantly.

They usually check in once a day to confirm everything is working, except for the monthly sound check. That’s when they verify WiFi.

I have three battery units (Gen 2), and they often show ‘offline’ on my network, but they still function normally and send alerts when needed.

Only when they’re connected to the new TP-Link router. On the Orbi, they don’t send anything.

Is IPv6 enabled on your Orbi?

No, and I’m not even sure if the Orbi (750) supports IPv6. But I added the TP-Link router as an access point and disabled DHCP on it, so I’m not sure if IPv6 would make any difference.

@Tim
The Orbi 750 does support IPv6, but it’s usually disabled by default. I have an RBK653 setup (RBR750 and two RBS350 satellites), and every time I lose power, I have to factory reset everything and reconnect manually before my devices, including Samsung phones, will work again.

I recently lost power while replacing a bathroom light, and it took me two hours of reboots and resets before the Orbi started working properly. I’m convinced it’s a firmware issue with the RBR750.

@Marcos
Are you referring to IPv6 from your ISP? I was talking about DHCP services not supporting it.

I haven’t played around with it much, but the IPv6 settings are available under both WAN and LAN in the Orbi’s GUI.
