Looking for Advice on Protecting My Home… First Time Homeowner Here

Hi everyone, we just bought our first home and I need some advice on how to keep my family and property safe from intruders.

We live in a safe neighborhood, but I know that burglars often go for easier targets. I want to make sure our house isn’t one of those.

I’m starting with cameras and motion-activated flood lights, and I’m trying to avoid subscription-based services. I’m going for cameras that record locally and have real-time feeds online.

What do you think? Is there anything else I should be doing to keep the house safe? How important is it to have an alarm system? Am I making a mistake by not getting 24/7 monitoring? Any suggestions for non-lethal defense options?

Door lock is a great option for when you’re at home.

I’d also recommend adding cameras inside near main entrances.

Don’t forget to secure your electric meter and internet provider’s equipment outside. You might also want to get a backup battery for your internet or cameras.

You can use landscaping to make people walk into camera view.

I’d suggest reinforcing your door jams and hinges with 3.5" screws to make your doors much stronger. Look into door armor kits for extra security.

For 24/7 monitoring, it’s great for when you’re not home.

I agree with using cameras around the house to monitor what’s going on, and putting alarm company signs might help too. Maybe also think about getting an alert dog—small but alert breeds work well. Keep something like a baseball bat nearby for emergencies.

Good luck with your security setup!

You might want to check out Reolink cameras. They’re good for home security.

How important is it to have an alarm system?

In my opinion, it’s really important. Cameras and notifications are great, but siren alarms can wake you up and alert your neighbors. The sound of a siren is enough to scare away petty criminals and warn you about a potential threat.

Is it foolish to skip 24/7 monitoring? What about non-lethal protection?

If you don’t want a subscription service, get a PoE/IP camera system for 24/7 monitoring. Check out Reolink or high-end Dahua/Hikvision cameras.

For non-lethal protection, having a real firearm is the best option for home defense. Non-lethal weapons could leave you at a disadvantage if the intruder is on drugs or armed. If you want something non-lethal, you could look at the Umarex HDX 68 or Grimburg Gavle. You could even modify a Umarex HDR 50/68 for higher power, which can help stop a threat.

I don’t have a gun, and I was thinking about getting a Umarex HDX 68 instead. A gun feels like a big commitment, and with kids in the house, I’m not sure about having one around.

Do you think a Umarex HDX 68 could be more dangerous than a gun? It’s legal where I live to own one, but I don’t think I can modify it.

Having a Umarex HDX 68 can be risky if not stored safely, but it’s not as dangerous as a firearm. If you choose to get it, store it securely, just like you would with any firearm. These devices won’t kill, but they can cause harm if aimed at someone’s head.

Keep in mind though, it won’t be as effective against someone high on drugs. If you’re dealing with someone armed or under the influence, a non-lethal option might not be enough. I recommend the 40J version of the HDX 68 for better stopping power.

You don’t need a subscription, but if you do go for one, try to find a local company rather than a big chain.

Motion lights work well, so definitely get a few cameras up around your property. Just don’t make it look too over-secured compared to your neighbors—there’s a balance. And don’t advertise that you own a gun unless you need to. Keeping a low profile can be key.

Also, some low-key security ideas: shorter fences with sharp tops to discourage climbing, and native plants like wild roses or cacti to act as barriers. Make sure your garage is secure too, especially if it’s attached to your home.

When we bought our home in 2019, we took some important steps: We made sure to run all the wiring for the cameras and added door armor kits. If you have a second story, don’t forget emergency escape ladders for your windows—practice with your family!

If you have a pool, keep a camera focused on it and monitor it on your TV. Kids can drown quietly, so it’s best to have eyes on it at all times.

I also recommend installing a driveway annunciator so you know when someone is approaching.

Start with securing your doors and windows.

Reinforce your exterior door jambs and use high-quality deadbolts for all exterior doors. For doors with windows or sidelights, get double-cylinder deadbolts.

Don’t forget about curtains! Make sure you have them on all windows and close them when you’re not home or at night.

If you’re into tech, check out HomeAssistant! It lets you control everything remotely and get notifications on your phone. It works with various devices, so you can set up your security system without depending on a single brand.

With HomeAssistant, I can get a photo sent to my phone if someone’s detected in the yard. It works well with other smart devices, like roller shades, which close at night or when I’m not home.

Definitely skip subscription services. You can create your own high-quality system with sensors, cameras, and more.

I already use HomeAssistant and it’s amazing! How do you have your cameras send pictures to your phone though?
