Looking for advice on a new security system for my home

Hey everyone,

I need a security system for my home. Right now, I have a few Google Home/Nest cameras set up outside, and while it would be nice if a new system worked with those, it’s not a dealbreaker. I’m mainly looking for:

  • Door sensors for the front and garage
  • Alarms for seven sliding glass doors
  • Glass break sensors
  • Smoke and fire detection
  • Possibly a motion sensor

We also have frequent power outages, so I’d like a system that has a battery backup or can run without power for a while.

I’m trying to decide between a professionally installed, monitored system (like Vivint) or a DIY, self-monitored option (like Ring or SimpliSafe). Any recommendations or advice? Thanks in advance!

I’d skip most of the ones you listed except maybe SimpliSafe. If you’re looking for a solid system, consider something from alarm.com like a Qolsys IQ 4 from SuretyHome or another local dealer. If you don’t want monitoring, you could get smart home sensors (Z-Wave or Zigbee) and link them with a smart home hub like Home Assistant or SmartThings.

Best advice I got was to go with a local installer that uses alarm.com. I have a monitored system with a Qolsys panel, and it’s been great. You can get one with or without a camera. I also use UNV cameras with an NVR, and I got everything from Nelly’s Security (nellyssecurity.com). They have good prices and free lifetime support.

Read the contract carefully before signing up with anyone. Big companies like ADT, Vivint, and Brinks use proprietary equipment that can only be monitored by them. That means if they raise their prices, you’re stuck with them. If you cancel early, you have to pay the rest of the contract, which can be 3 to 5 years. A local company might be a better choice since they often offer short-term or no contracts and use equipment that can be serviced by others.

Which Google Nest cameras do you have? If they’re the newer models (Nest Cam Battery, Nest Doorbell Battery, Floodlight Cam, etc.), then ADT+ might be a good option. Their app works really well with Google cameras, sometimes even better than Google’s own app.

If you go with ADT, you have a couple of options. You can either install everything yourself and then add a professional install later for any extras like a garage door opener. If you install it all yourself, you won’t be locked into a contract, but if ADT installs everything, you’ll have to sign one.

Whatever you choose, read the contract carefully. Some companies only give you three days to cancel, while DIY systems usually give you 30 days.

If you want a system that works with Google but isn’t ADT, Abode might be an option. Just keep in mind that Vivint and most alarm.com systems won’t work with your Google cameras at all.
