Looking for a Wi-Fi battery or solar-powered camera for my orchard… any suggestions?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to find a camera to put in our orchard to monitor wildlife and prevent damage. Ideally, I’m looking for an outdoor camera that’s battery-powered, but if there’s a version with a solar panel, that’d be even better. I don’t need continuous recording, just something with a PIR or motion sensor that triggers when an animal passes by.

I’d like to connect the camera to my Wi-Fi and have the recorded events sent to a service like Zoneminder or Frigate so I can check it later and get phone notifications. I’d also prefer if it’s under 100 EUR, though that’s not a hard limit.

Is there a camera that meets these requirements?

I’ve been using Wyze outdoor cameras. They’ve discontinued the older version because it wasn’t waterproof enough, but the new ones are supposed to be better. They’re battery-powered, and two of mine are connected to solar panels. The range is a bit limited, and the free plan doesn’t offer many recording options. My brother has Ring outdoor cameras that are Wi-Fi-enabled, weatherproof, and run on batteries with small solar panels. His are on his house, so I’m not sure about the range.

This looks promising, especially the Pro version. If I can set it up as a simple IP camera without a base station, it’d be perfect. How far are your cameras from your router or access point?

My farthest camera is about 40 feet from the solar panel, and around 70 feet from my Starlink router. It’s not in direct line of sight, but close enough. I have another camera about 50 feet away, and it’s on the other side of a wood shed. Since this model is discontinued, I’d recommend checking out the Wyze subreddit for more details. You might also want to look into driveway alarms—they’re battery-powered and can alert you remotely.
