Hey everyone. I’m trying to figure out a way to keep my propane tank from getting stolen. My grill and the tank are on a wooden deck, so I’d rather not use a cable lock if I can avoid it. Maybe bolting it down somehow?
I don’t think I need something super strong—just enough to stop someone from grabbing it on impulse. I’ve got a few ideas, but I’d love to hear what you think.
You could try a lockout cover for the valve or even take off the valve knob when you’re not using it. Kind of like those water spigots you see that don’t have handles in public spaces. Anything that makes it harder or slower for someone to take the tank could make them think twice.
Maybe use a steel strap with holes in it? You could loop it through the gaps between the deck boards and secure it with bolts or a padlock. It would make it harder for someone to lift the tank or the grill.

If the gaps in the deck don’t work, you could bolt an eye screw into the deck and attach the chain to that. With a sturdy bolt and lock, it’s not something most backyard thieves would be prepared to mess with.
You could use the handle on the propane tank to secure it with a cable or chain. I’d avoid attaching anything near the valve since that could cause damage. Maybe install a u-bolt through two deck planks and run the chain or cable through that. A good bike lock might do the trick too.
Adding a motion light could also help. It’d be useful for grilling after dark and might scare off anyone sneaking around. You could hide the lock with a potted plant if you don’t like how it looks, but having it visible might actually keep someone from trying anything in the first place.
You could push the grill up against the railing and run a cable lock through the tank’s handle. Secure the other end around a railing post or the deck support. It’s simple and should slow them down enough to stop most people.
