I live in a condo complex in Vallejo, California, and in the last six months, there have been four shootings by people who rent units inside the gate. Three of them happened in the last three weeks. I was outside for the second one, and near the third one. I am worried about being hit by stray bullets.
There have also been major issues with the condo, including leaks that caused expensive repairs and rebuilding in the last three months.
I’m paying cash for realtor fees and closing costs to move, but I need suggestions on how to stay safe here until it sells.
I already come home before dark and stay inside until 6 or 7 am.
Sounds like you’re already doing everything you can to stay safe. Have you thought about buying a gun for home defense? An AR15, a semi-auto shotgun, or a duty-sized pistol would work well for protection.

Have you thought about renting somewhere short-term while you wait?
I’ve thought about it, but short-term rentals are really expensive and could eat into the money I’ve saved for closing costs on a new home. I could maybe travel or camp around the US west for a while though.

Try using books, full boxes, or bins to create a barrier against the most exposed areas. It’ll also help you pack faster when you find a new place.
A 2-year-old was caught in the crossfire not far from here while out in a car with her mother. It’s crazy, and violence seems to be getting worse.
