How to get mechanical chime to work with ring battery doorbell 2024

I recently bought a Ring battery doorbell and connected it to the existing wiring from my old doorbell. The app confirms it’s “Hardwired,” and the battery is fully charged now (started at 79%, currently at 100%).

The issue is that my mechanical in-house chime doesn’t work. Can I install a power kit to fix this, or could that cause other problems?

You need to go into the device settings and enable the home chime through the chime settings.

I tried that but no luck. I tested both the “Automatic Chime Detection” and the “Advanced Settings” set to “Mechanical.” Neither made the chime work.

Can you upload a photo of the wiring inside your chime box?

The wiring looks fine to me. That’s a standard chime setup, so there’s not much that can go wrong. Try doing a factory reset on the doorbell by holding the setup button for 20 seconds. After that, reconnect it through the device health screen. If that doesn’t solve it, you might need to contact Ring support.

Would a power kit solve this? It feels like there’s not enough power in the circuit to drive the chime now that the Ring doorbell is connected. When I disconnect the wires from the Ring and touch them together, the chime works fine.

You probably need to install a pro power kit on the chime.

The Ring website says the power kit is only compatible with the Pro models. I have the basic model. Do you know if it will still work?

You might need to replace your doorbell transformer with a higher-powered one.

The one I have is 16V 10VA. Shouldn’t that be enough?

You might want to try upgrading to a 16VAC/30VA transformer. Home Depot sells one by Defiant that’s compatible with most video doorbells.
