Hi everyone, I’m trying to figure out a way to stop someone from stealing my propane tank. It’s sitting with the grill on a wooden deck, so I’d prefer to avoid using a cable lock and instead screw it down somehow. The goal is to prevent quick thefts, not to make it impossible for someone really determined. I have a few ideas, but I’d love to hear yours. Any suggestions?

That could work, but they might still grab it before noticing the lock or missing knob.
How about using a chain through the base of the tank and attaching it to the grill legs, then running it through the gaps in your deck boards? I know you’re not a fan of cable locks, but they might let you secure both the tank and the grill with one device. Of course, this would still be vulnerable to someone with bolt cutters.
Push the grill up against the railing and use a cable lock through the propane tank’s handle. Then secure the other end to a patio post or support beam. Simple and effective.
You could use steel strapping with holes in it. Run the strap down through the deck gaps, and secure it with a padlock or bolts. If done right, they won’t be able to pull the strap out, and it should hold pretty well.
You can secure both the grill and the tank. Use the handle on the tank for locking—it’s safer than trying to attach anything near the valve. A u-bolt through two deck planks would be a strong anchor point for a cable or chain lock. Add a motion-activated light for extra deterrence, which is also handy when grilling at night. You might not end up with the prettiest solution, but it’ll work. If you want to hide it, put a potted plant nearby, though showing the lock might scare off thieves anyway.
You’re just trying to make it more trouble than it’s worth for someone. If they really want it, they might cut into your deck to take it. Get four L-shaped brackets, bolt them to the grill legs, and secure them to the deck with lag screws. Then use a bike cable for the propane tank—it’s cheap and easy. If you can lock both the grill and the tank to the deck, that’s even better.
Just reading through and picking which idea to try…
