Help! I messed up my hardwired security system

I have a Qolsys IQ Panel 4 that’s hardwired to an old security system cabinet in my closet. I thought the cabinet and battery were for an outdated system that wasn’t in use, so I removed the battery and cut the cables, planning to take the cabinet down.

Now, I’ve realized the doorbell and panel were connected to that battery, and both are dead. The wires are taped and sitting inside the wall. What should I do to fix this?

The battery was just a backup, but one of the wires you cut was likely providing power. Doorbells typically aren’t wired to alarm panels, so I’m not sure about that part. If you’re talking about a wired-to-wireless takeover module, that could complicate things. You might need to identify what components were connected before cutting anything else.

He likely had a hardwired-to-wireless takeover module. You could replace the power source with an Altronix power supply and battery for backup. Depending on the wiring, the doorbell might’ve been powered through the cabinet, but you’d need to verify. If you’re unsure, consult a professional.

You’ll need to fish the wires out of the wall and splice new leads of the same gauge. Check the polarity (look for markings or color coding) and reconnect the battery. For the doorbell, check if it’s powered by a transformer rather than the panel. If so, trace that connection.

If budget isn’t an issue, you could replace the zones you cut with wireless sensors.

You should contact a local alarm provider—not ADT. Since you’ve cut wires, it’s hard to tell which wire does what. For the doorbell, it’s possible you shorted out the transformer. If you can identify the transformer location and replace it, that might solve the problem. Be sure the wires aren’t still shorted before installing a new transformer.

This can be fixed. Use a continuity tester to identify the wires. Remove the doorbell and attach one end of the tester to it, then check the wires in the wall. Do the same for the power wire to the Qolsys panel. Once you’ve identified the wires, you can reconnect them properly.

Thank you!

You’re welcome!

You’ll likely need someone with a toner and a meter to figure out which wires do what. Expect to pay around $100 to $130 per hour for professional repairs. Do you still have all the devices that were connected to the cabinet?

You should contact your alarm provider for assistance. Hopefully, it’s not ADT.
