Help a Rookie Out with Home Security?

My wife and I just bought our first home, and we know little to nothing about security systems.

We’re not really looking for active monitoring. Instead, we want something we can access from our phones or computer to review footage and see who’s at the door or around the front/back of the house.

Is an NVR system the way to go? If so, do you have any brand recommendations? Ideally, we’d like to keep the cost under $1,000.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Hello Clinton, NVR (Network Video Recorder) System for Home Security

Key Considerations:

  • Camera Quality: Choose cameras with at least 1080p resolution and night vision.
  • Storage Capacity: Ensure the NVR supports the number of cameras and desired recording duration.
  • Ease of Use: Look for a user-friendly interface for straightforward setup and operation.
  • Additional Features: Consider systems with two-way audio, motion detection, and smart home compatibility.

Brands Under $1,000:

  • Reolink: Reliable and cost-effective.
  • Amcrest: Good price-to-performance ratio.
  • Hikvision: High quality but slightly higher in price.
  • Annke: Affordable with solid features.

Installation Tips:

  • Camera Placement: Cover key areas such as entrances and backyards.
  • Power Supply: Ensure sufficient power outlets.
  • Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Choose based on your preference for wireless or wired cameras.
  • Professional Installation: Hire an installer if needed.
