Does an 8K PoE single-lens camera exist?

I find it strange that cell phones have been integrating high-quality 8K cameras for several years, but in the security camera space, 1080p and 2.5K cameras are still the norm, and even 4K cameras are hard to find. I’ve even considered using a cell phone in a tamper-proof enclosure with a PoE to USB-C adapter as a DIY solution with remote management.

The only 8K cameras I can find are multi-lens setups that cost thousands of dollars. I’m not looking to spend $1K+ per camera, but I’d love an 8K camera for security purposes—being able to see facial details or distant objects while keeping a wide field of view would be ideal.

At the moment, I have two 4K PoE cameras at home, running at 16Mbps each, and bumping that up to 64Mbps wouldn’t be an issue. My home is wired for 1Gbps, and I use Blue Iris for VMS on a system with plenty of resources to handle more workload—it basically idles as it is.

Anyone know if an affordable 8K PoE single-lens camera exists?

If you want a low-light capable camera that can truly take advantage of an 8K sensor, the lens alone would likely cost more than your $1K budget.

Honestly, a good quality 1080p camera would probably give you better video than a cheap 8K camera.

I agree that the camera quality on most security cameras is disappointing. I’ve worked with hundreds over the years, from brands like Axis to more affordable ones like Trendnet, and they all leave a lot to be desired. Surprisingly, the best ones I’ve used recently are Trendnet’s TV-IP1319PI 8MP 4K cameras. Great picture quality, solid low-light performance, but they discontinued it. Way better than any Axis camera I’ve dealt with.

Are you sure your encoding settings are optimized? Issues like pixelization and motion blur can often be fixed with proper bitrate, compression, and framerate settings. I upgraded surveillance systems at several Wells Fargo branches, using Wisenet cams, and the facial detail has been consistently excellent.

However, MSRP is $15K USD, but you might find it for around $10K. And that’s without the lens.

8K is around 35 megapixels. The highest single-lens security cameras I’ve seen go up to 12MP. Security cameras usually lag behind the rest of the tech world because they’re designed to run 24/7 and last a long time. Sensor size also matters—2K cameras often perform better in low-light than 4K ones because they can capture more light. I’m guessing there’s just not enough demand for 8K in this space yet. But I’d love one for my front door!

I love how nobody’s directly answering your question and instead telling you why you don’t need 8K. To answer it, no, a single-lens 8K PoE camera isn’t available yet. But hopefully we’ll see it in the near future.

@stephane
Exactly! Camera security tech is so far behind. The technology exists—it just hasn’t made it to the security market yet.
