Do Air Purifiers Really Work? What Are the Best Ones to Buy for Home Use Today?

Hey everyone, I’m looking to buy an air purifier during the sales season and could really use some advice. I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the options out there and thought this might be the best place to get some real-life feedback. I need one mainly to handle odors and pet hair in my home, and my budget is under $1000. Which models do you guys recommend?

I’ve had a great experience with two different Levoit models. During last year’s Canadian wildfires, my allergies were unbearable even indoors, but the air purifiers really helped clean up the air. Whether it’s cooking odors or wildfire smoke, they’ve been fantastic. I use the Levoit 600S as my main purifier and the 400S in my bedroom.

I use the 400S in our bedroom too. It’s helped a lot with allergies and keeps the air clean even when there’s cooking or hair products being used elsewhere in the house.

@Tessa
I have the Levoit 300s and it’s made a noticeable difference in reducing stuffiness at night, especially during summer.

What exactly are you looking to filter? I’ve done a lot of research and found that DIY air purifiers are really effective and economical. Look up ‘Corsi-Rosenthal box’ and ‘DIY air cleaner effectiveness’ to see studies supporting their efficiency. I use a mix of DIY filters and a Coway Airmega AP-1512HH, which is quiet and economical on replacement filters.

IKEA has some good, budget-friendly options. Worth checking out!

I agree with checking out IKEA’s options.

Plus, their replacement filters are super affordable.

I found an article on Wirecutter very helpful for understanding which features to look for in an air purifier. I chose one with a true HEPA filter and it’s been great for my allergies.

We’ve got a Conway air purifier at home and it’s super quiet with several settings, including an auto mode that adjusts based on air quality. It made a noticeable improvement in our sleep quality from the first night.

@Melissa
Do you mean Coway? What model is it? I’m looking to buy one.

Yes, sorry, it’s Coway. We have the AP-1512HH model. It’s been top-rated for years now and there’s a good deal on Amazon at the moment.

I recently got the AirDoctor whole-home filter and it’s been excellent for dealing with spring pollen. Definitely recommend it if you’re sensitive to pollen.

The Winix models from Costco are great and often go on sale for $99. They’re the best value I’ve found.

I’ve got three of them at home. They’re durable and the filters show just how much dust and allergens they’ve been catching.

I use several Coway and Levoit purifiers at home. Each serves a different purpose based on room size and air quality needs. They’re compatible with smart home systems too, which is a plus for me.

If you have pets and need something for asthma, Blueair purifiers are excellent. They go on sale often, and you can get high-end models at a good discount.

I use Blueair for my seasonal allergies too. It’s made a big difference for me.

As a parrot owner, air purifiers are a must. I’ve tried several, but the Coway Airmega and the GermGuardian have been the most effective.

Living in an area affected by intense wildfires, my Levoit air purifier has been a lifesaver. It keeps the indoor air quality at optimal levels, even when it’s hazardous outside.

I use the Shark NeverChange 5 Air Purifier. It’s economical over time because it doesn’t require frequent filter replacements.
