Hey everyone, I signed a 5-year contract with ADT and still have 18 months left. The system works fine for me, especially the smoke and CO detectors, and I’d rather not just throw it all away after paying $1500 for it.
I’ve seen posts saying whether you can reuse ADT gear depends on the specific equipment. My setup is completely wireless and includes Smoke/CO detectors (x3), Motion Sensors (x2), Water Sensor, Glass Break Sensor, and Door Sensors (x5). I also have the Command 7" Touchscreen panel.
Does anyone know if this system can be repurposed, or am I stuck with ADT?
I had the same ADT Command system and switched to a DIY setup from Surety. The ADT panel, touchscreen, smoke/CO detectors, cameras, and sensors couldn’t be reused. I sold mine on eBay and only got $75 for everything.
The only things I could reuse were my Z-Wave devices, like the garage door automation (GoControl) and my smart lock. Everything else had to go.
I had ADT for over five years on a three-year contract before I finally canceled. They were charging me almost $80 per month by the end. Now, I pay $35 for a better system with more cameras.
Some older ADT sensors can work with third-party systems, but the newer ones, especially Resideo SIX, are locked. You might be able to salvage some generic devices if they use Z-Wave or another open standard.
If your goal is to avoid paying ADT, you could try switching to a local alarm monitoring service and see if they can integrate any of your gear. Some companies can reprogram panels, but it depends on the model.
You might want to check with ADT directly to see if they offer a way to unlock the panel after your contract is up. Some providers let you use their systems after the contract ends, but others don’t.
