I want to get a nest thermostats that I can control from my phone. Is it possible to install one? Which one would I need?
Yes, you can install a Nest thermostat here.
Any model will work, but I personally don’t like the learning model because I prefer to set temperatures manually and use routines instead of having it adjust on its own. Some people like the auto-adjusting feature, so it depends on your preference.
Wiring:
- Red to R or RH (not RC)
- Yellow to Y
- Green to G
- Blue to C
- White to W
Edit: Someone will probably comment that Nest jumps RH and RC internally, but just connect to RH if you have both. If there’s only R, use that. I get this question all the time.

Does it matter which Nest model I buy?

Not really. The learning model adjusts based on your habits, which some people like, but others find annoying. The non-learning model does everything except auto-adjust your temp, so if you prefer to set schedules yourself, that might be the better option.

It does internally jump RH and RC if you only connect one wire. If your system has a standard transformer setup, it doesn’t matter, but for consistency, RH is usually the better choice.

Yeah, I get this question a lot. It’s just easier to tell people to use RH than to go into a long explanation every time.
Check eBay. I’ve found brand-new ones for around $40. I’ve got four of them, and they’ve worked great.
Both 3rd and 4th gen have been solid.
