Hey everyone, I’m new to this whole security system thing. I’m planning to build a new home and want to have a hardwired security system set up. I tried using a wireless system in my current house, but it missed a lot of activity, which was frustrating. Any tips on how to go about planning and installing a DIY system would be amazing. Thanks in advance.
If you’re doing a hardwired system, make sure to run wires like 22-4 for your sensors and 18-4 for keypads or motion detectors. Label them properly too. It will save you a lot of headaches later.

Totally agree. Also, consider adding a 22-4 for landline communication just in case. Better to have it and not need it than the other way around.

Good call on labeling. I didn’t think of that. Thanks for the heads-up.
A wired system is definitely more reliable. Out of curiosity, which wireless system were you using? Some are pretty hit-or-miss.

I was using a Eufy wireless setup—doorbell and two cameras. It missed a lot of events, so I’m leaning toward something wired now.

Eufy has decent cameras, but for a solid wired system, you can’t go wrong with Honeywell or a Honeywell Vista setup.
Remember that cameras are great, but they don’t provide actual security unless monitored. They’re more for recording what happened.

True. I was thinking of combining cameras with sensors to cover all bases.
Planning is key. Focus on entry points and vulnerable areas first. I started with a Vivint doorbell camera, and it has been a game-changer for me.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll make a list of key spots to cover before I start wiring.
