I recently got some Ring cameras and a doorbell at a great price from someone moving out. Now that I’m getting into security and automation, I want to use an Alarm.com-compatible provider while keeping the Ring cameras I already have. I also want some home automation and monitoring that isn’t tied to the security system.
Here’s my proposed setup—am I overcomplicating this?
Since you’re using Ring cameras, you’ll be stuck with the Ring app. That’s the downside of proprietary hardware.
Alarm.com doesn’t work with HomeKit, but their automation is some of the best out there. I haven’t used Surety personally, but I’d recommend getting a monitored alarm system from an Alarm.com provider instead of self-monitoring.
Also, if you’re including a smoke detector, take advantage of automation features like shutting down the thermostat during an alarm. HomeKit wouldn’t be ideal for that.
Why use Home Assistant for temperature, water leak detection, and gate monitoring instead of adding them to your alarm system? Not saying it’s a bad idea, just wondering what the benefit is of keeping them separate.
