Best way to attach plywood to a stucco wall for mounting a camera?

I need to mount a small piece of plywood onto a stucco exterior wall so I can install a security camera.

One option I’m considering is drilling holes and using plastic drywall anchors with weatherproof screws. Would that be strong enough?

I saw someone install a metal support on a similar stucco wall, and he just drilled straight in with some kind of heavy-duty screw. It had a hex head, and he used a socket to drive it in effortlessly. I was surprised because I’ve tried drilling into stucco before, and it was a struggle.

Would that method work for plywood too? And what type of screw might he have used?

Appreciate any advice.

If there’s no plywood backing behind the stucco, try locating a stud underneath for better support.

We installed a Reolink Trackmix and a turret camera directly into thick stucco without using a special backplate. Worked fine.
