Wifi is spotty here, so I’d love a camera that doesn’t need it to run. Do I need wifi to view live footage? I’m new to this whole setup, so any pointers would help!
Ideally, I’d like it to notify me of motion, too. It will be under a porch, so it doesn’t need to be waterproof, and I have a power outlet nearby.
If you can run ethernet to the camera location, you’re set. Wired cameras are way more reliable. I’ve had great results with Dahua Tioc cameras, which let you set up custom alerts.

I can easily, the router’s right by the door! I’ll check those out, thanks!
I’ve been using this one, and it’s worked well. You can watch live on your TV through HDMI, plus view from your phone on wifi. It should have notification options, though I haven’t tried that part yet.
Reolink, Annke, Lorex, and Ubiquiti make solid cameras. If possible, use Ethernet, not wifi. Also, consider temperature ratings for the camera if you’re in an extreme climate. ANNKE and Lorex have cameras built for cold weather with internal heaters.
To get notifications without wifi, you’d need LTE trail cameras or a serious setup with wired options. Realistically, wifi makes notifications simpler, so even if it’s slow, it’s worth using.

That works, I just can’t rely on wifi for speed. Thanks for the heads up.

If it’s on a porch with power, go for Ethernet with a PoE connection. One cable handles both power and data, making it a stable option.
