Are there any reliable smoke detectors out there

My First Alert smoke alarms just went off randomly for the third night in a row, this time waking up all of my houseguests at 5am. Although these are supposed to be good alarms, once a year or so, one of them starts acting up and it’s really annoying. I’m feeling pretty hostile towards smoke detector design this morning. Does anyone have a smoke detector they actually like? Here’s what I’m looking for: Dual sensor (ionization and photoelectric), carbon monoxide detection, hardwired, networked (where one sensor sets them all off), reasonable low battery alerts, no false positives, and it would be great if I could check the status on my phone and turn off false alarms manually.

I really like the Nest Protect. It lets me silence alarms from my phone when I’m cooking, it tests itself regularly, and I can control those tests too. Plus, the nightlight feature is a nice touch. I’m very satisfied with them.

I heard Google discontinued this product, is that true?

No, they haven’t.

Not yet, at least.

@Melvin
Has there been any indication that they will?

The problem is Google will randomly, without warning, just discontinue a product line.

All of their actions so far with Nest included long notifications and even free replacement products.

Generally, I try to avoid Google, but the Nest Protects have worked well for me.

@CharlotteAmelia
Did they ever finish moving from the Nest app to the Google Home app?

No, they haven’t. Google can be frustrating, but the Nest Protects are reliable.

@CharlotteAmelia
So, it’s essentially a discontinued product on its way out.

I wouldn’t recommend them. Mine keeps telling me the batteries are low even though they’re nearly full. It’s been doing this every day for over a year, and the wifi connection is unreliable without notifying me.

@EvansBrown14
I’ve been using 16 of them across three locations for over five years without any issues.

@EvansBrown14
Mine loses wifi too. It reconnects when I press the button, so why can’t it do that automatically? It’s frustrating.

If it’s happening regularly, it could be interference from a neighbor’s device or possibly a carbon monoxide issue. Has anyone been smoking inside?

I use standard hard-wired smoke/CO detectors and added a Zooz Zen55 relay to integrate them with my Home Assistant setup. It’s not a complete solution to all your needs but might be worth considering.

I’ve been using Nest Protects for eight years, and they’ve been excellent. They notify me on my phone, speak the alarm location and type, and the motion-sensing nightlight is very useful.

I’ve had a good experience with X-sense. They have a wide range of features, but you might need to mix and match different models. I like the physical remote for testing and silencing the alarms, and I haven’t had any false alarms.
