I need to replace my Kwikset doorknob and deadbolt since they’ve been giving me problems. I’ve seen that Schlage is one of the better budget-friendly brands, but I can’t find much information about their ‘First Secure’ line. It looks like a cheaper version of their regular locks. Would this be a step up from Kwikset or Hyper Tough, or should I look at something else? Appreciate any advice.
Avoid cheap locks. If you want real security, buy locks from a locksmith. If you install them yourself, it’s not too pricey—around $100 per lock. I’d recommend Schlage Primus.
If you’re curious, look up ‘bump key’ and see how easy it is to get past low-end locks.

Agreed. A cheap lock only keeps out people who weren’t planning to break in anyway. I picked my balcony door lock in about 15 seconds the first time I tried lockpicking. It’s surprisingly easy.
