Has anyone here used drones as part of their home security setup? I’ve been thinking about adding a drone since my outdoor cameras can’t always catch everything, especially when something is moving.
My idea was to have a small helipad on the roof that protects the drone from weather and charges it when not in use. Then, it could take off when needed.
No way. Drones aren’t like cameras that just sit there and record. You’d have to actively fly it every time something triggers it, and that’s too much hassle.

This reminded me of something! A while back, there was talk about an Amazon drone that could fly around inside your house and do security checks.
They pitched it as a way to check things like whether your stove is off or your doors are locked. I could see it being handy for other stuff too.
Unless you live on a huge property like a farm, I don’t see the point. This sounds way too expensive for what it would achieve. Cameras are much more practical.
Don’t bother with a drone. Just put up some PoE cameras around the perimeter. You really don’t want to be trying to fly a drone in a stressful situation.

Yeah, PoE cameras work great. You could even add trail cameras in the trees to cover any blind spots.
Here’s an idea: Get a FatShark HDO2, a Taranis QX7 with an ELRS module, and a TinyWhoop. You’ll end up having so much fun flying laps around your property that you’ll forget you were supposed to be using it for security.
Unless the drones can fully automate themselves, it’s not worth it. I’d want one that could do perimeter checks on its own and respond to sensor triggers without me needing to control it.
The DJI Matrice 300 with the DJI Dock does exactly what you’re describing. It can dock, charge, and fly preprogrammed routes. The downside? It’ll cost you five figures and requires a license. Anything cheaper won’t be practical.
The Hacksmith on YouTube did a video about drones for security. They linked to some systems, but they’re crazy expensive—like $10,000 to $26,000, if I remember right.
I signed up to beta test Amazon’s flying drone but never heard back. Someone in my family tried the wheeled one, but I don’t think it ever shipped. Honestly, trying to fly a drone during a security issue sounds unrealistic. You’d need it to work automatically to be useful.
