Anyone know why my Shelly relay isn’t powering up?

Hi everyone,

I’m pretty sure I wired everything correctly, but the relay isn’t powering on even though I’ve connected the neutral.

Any advice on what might be going wrong?

I have a couple of bypass units arriving soon, but I don’t think they’ll help if it’s not working with the neutral already connected.

Here’s my setup:

  • Permanent live in a Wago block with connections to L and I
  • Switched lives in another Wago block connected to O
  • Connection from SW to L1 on the light switch
  • Neutral (N) connected to other neutral wires in a Wago block

Thanks.

The issue might be that the wago blocks are connecting all the wires together. It’s like you twisted all those wires into one.

Feel free to send me a wiring diagram if you need more help.

That’s actually how they were before, all in an older style block with screws holding them. I just swapped to wago for a slimmer fit.

@Grant
Could you post a few more pictures?

Maybe it’s time to call in an electrician?

Appreciate the advice, but I’m hoping to figure it out myself first!

Honestly, it might be the best solution.

From the pictures, it looks like the wires might not be inserted properly into the wago blocks, and one on the Shelly side seems damaged.

First thing to check is if you’ve stripped the right length of insulation. If it’s not making contact, that could explain the issue.

Make sure you’ve stripped about 11mm as marked on the wago block (here’s the official video). Also, using a test meter to check which wires are live could really help you pinpoint any bad connections.

It’s also possible the wires aren’t doing what you expect. In some setups, the live goes directly to a terminal block behind the light fitting. Your setup looks fine with the color codes, but if your home has an unusual setup, it might cause issues.

Just a thought – do the ‘switched lives’ (connected to O) go directly to the lights, or is there something else in between? Also, does this Shelly model support dimmers?

If you connect just live and neutral, does anything power up? That would help to rule out a bad relay.

@Nolan
Yeah, the switched lives go to the ceiling lights, though I think there might be something else in-between because there are 3 bulbs but only 2 wires :joy:

I actually tried this setup on another light in the house with the same result, and I also confirmed it’s not the relay since it powers up fine when connected to a nearby wall socket.

It just won’t work with the light circuit :weary:

@Grant
Did you measure to confirm power on live and neutral?

Yes, there’s definitely power. If I remove the relay and reconnect the old switch, it works perfectly.

Try just connecting live and neutral alone. If it doesn’t power up, then something’s off with live or neutral.

Did that, still no luck. Starting to think it might be a neutral issue. I’ll test it tomorrow with a multimeter.

This isn’t directly related, but it looks like you’re using different wire gauge sizes. That might be risky depending on how it’s wired.

Smallest is 1.5mm core with a 6 amp MCB. Not sure what the issue would be?

How are you not tripping any breakers? I see potential short circuits here.

Could you point out where? I’m not seeing any shorts myself :thinking:

Some dimmers and specific light fixtures don’t play well with this setup. I’d suggest taking a step-by-step approach. First, try hooking up the Shelly to a single fixture or even a simple lamp instead of the lights to test it as a standalone unit. If it works, the problem may be with the light setup.

If you still have issues, maybe consider getting an electrician in for an hour just to see if there’s anything unusual about your wiring. I know DIY is the goal here, but once they’ve explained the setup, you could be set for future projects.
