Anyone know a good outdoor camera with night vision?

My neighbor has been using a drone to peek into my second-story bedroom window at night. I’m in a rural area surrounded by woods, and this happened at least four times in one night. I managed to catch the lights of the drone with my cheap Wyze camera inside the window, but the footage isn’t clear enough for me to take action. I’ve closed the window and curtains, and I think my neighbor got the hint because I even went outside to give the drone a little ‘salute’ (lol).

I’m worried he might try again, so I want to install an outdoor camera with better night vision and more detail. I’d prefer to view the footage on my computer, not a tablet or phone. There are so many cameras out there, and I’m a bit lost. I’d like one that records to a micro SD card and uses Wi-Fi, no cloud service or complicated setup. Ethernet is a no-go for me. Any suggestions on where to start would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

If your bedroom window isn’t visible from a public area like the street, this could fall under the peeping Tom laws in your area. You might want to report the neighbor to the police with the footage you have now. Even though better cameras would help, the police could already use the footage you have as evidence.

The key thing is whether your window is in public view. If it’s not visible from the street or your neighbor’s property, you might already have a case.

Maybe you could put up some netting, like the type used in gardening. You could get trellis or bird netting that’s hard to see and it might even catch the drone.

If this was a forum for sneaky tips, I’d suggest jamming the drone’s signal so it crashes and you can collect it. There are lots of ways you could handle it after that.

The issue is that jamming the signal could interfere with more than just your property. If the neighbor figures out the drone stops working near your house, they might call the police. The FCC is really strict about interference with airwaves, so that could cause more trouble than it solves.

I use Night Owl cameras, and the night vision is excellent. You might want to look into them.

You could use a cheap trail camera. I get mine from Cabela’s. You could also try a motion sensor sprinkler on your roof. That might surprise the drone.

If the drone has lights, it might not be visible in the footage. And how would you prove it’s your neighbor’s drone and not just someone passing by? Simply seeing inside a window that’s visible from public space usually isn’t illegal. You need to make sure the area is private if you want to stop this.

Where I live, it’s illegal for drones to look into windows. The drone was only a few feet away from my second-story window, which was open. I don’t expect people to be standing on my porch roof peering into my house. My house is secluded, and no one can see into the windows unless they’re on my property. So this is definitely not just some random person walking by.

I’d invest in a big stick too. Your neighbor’s way out of line. If it happens again, smash the drone!

Not sure about your area, but in a lot of places, people think it’s illegal to look through windows, but it’s not always true unless someone is trespassing. You might want to double-check with local laws.

What you need to do is leave some buckets of gravel or marbles near your window. When the drone comes, pretend like you’re going to greet it, then throw the gravel at it. If you hit it, take a bat and finish the job.

What your neighbor did is definitely illegal. Report it to the police, and hopefully, they’ll investigate the person flying the drone. In the meantime, a simple Wi-Fi camera on your windowsill with an SD card should capture enough footage to stop them. By the time they realize you have a camera, you’ll already have what you need.

You could try the Eufy solar standalone S220. I’ve used it at my cabin, and it works well as long as it gets sun and Wi-Fi.

Just wanted to mention that Wyze does have a web viewer now, in case you didn’t know!
