So I’ve been feeling a bit down lately and dealing with some anxiety. I’m in a much better mental place than I was before, but still, I was wondering if anyone here has any ideas for home defense that don’t involve knives or guns. I already have a doorbell camera, backyard camera, and door sensors. I’m thinking about adding some window film to make it harder to get through any easily accessible windows. Just feeling a little on edge with everything going on.
If you’re thinking about pepper spray, maybe try the pepper gel instead. It’s safer since it’s less likely to blind you by accident.

Thanks for the tip! I was actually thinking about carrying some to protect my dog in case of an attack. I know the chances are super low, but I’d be devastated if something happened.
It’s been said a lot, but it’s worth repeating—do the basics right: Lock your doors, check them regularly, and keep everything maintained.

Good advice, thank you! I make sure to check every night now. Maintaining everything is new to me, though, but I’ll get on that.
Just a heads-up—window security film needs to be properly attached to the frame, or it won’t be as effective. Here’s a link to my setup for defense, deterrence, and info gathering for police: https://imgur.com/a/home-security-aXChCRd. Cheers!
@Zoey
One thing to think about with security film is that it can actually trap you inside during a fire if you’re unable to break the window quickly. It’s a trade-off like with burglar bars, though they’re better than bars because at least you can open the window if needed.
@Elaina
That’s a solid point, I’ll make sure to mention that in future comments about safety features that limit escape. Thanks for bringing it up!
How about pepper gel? You could also use a baseball bat with a sock on the end of it—so it slips off if someone tries to grab it.
Security film needs to be properly anchored around the edges with adhesive, like caulk, to make sure it sticks and prevents breaking out the entire pane.

Oh, good to know! I’ll add that to my list for when I start on the project. Thanks for the heads-up!

What’s happening? Are you talking about using OC spray?

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll check out some OC spray options. Another person recommended it too. Honestly, I think it’s more anxiety talking, but I just get worried about my safety and the safety of my friends and family. Election time just feels like it amps up the tension—IDK if it’s always been like this, but it definitely feels like things keep getting more intense.
@Ike
I totally agree. People seem to be getting crazier lately.
Pepper spray is an option, but if it’s legal where you are, you could look into a taser (like the Axon Taser X2). It’s better because it shoots darts from a distance, so you don’t have to be in someone’s face. Stand-off distance is important for safety, and while pepper spray and pepperball can help, they might still affect you inside your home.
A high-powered strobe flashlight is also good, especially if there’s a power outage.
