Anyone else learning tons about home security and defense here?

My mind is blown by all the useful info I never knew about before reading through this forum

This place is amazing. I’m learning a lot, especially things like high-security locks with locks on both sides or reinforcing the latch on a door frame. These ideas make so much sense once you know about them, but they’re not common knowledge

I don’t think many people even know about these options!

Are there any niche forums where people talk in depth about this stuff and where the serious experts hang out?

I wouldn’t really call this a goldmine since there’s a lot of bad advice and bad ideas around here too. But there’s definitely some good advice too.

I agree, there are definitely bad ideas and advice here, but the nuggets of gold I find really make a difference. It’s like looking for treasure: sure, you come across a lot of junk, but the gold is worth it.

Are there forums where the quality is better and the experts really go into detail? I’m trying to avoid all the noise and get to the good stuff.

I’m even open to answering questions like these to get through the noise:

- ‘Is it smart to leave your car windows unlocked so thieves move on because there’s nothing worth stealing?’

- ‘What do you think about having a 3000dB airhorn connected to an alarm so it wakes up the whole neighborhood and gets your neighbors to detain the intruder until the cops show up?’

- ‘Should you install disco light ring cameras that flash bright lights at intruders to scare them away?’

It seems like some people here actually do these things and feel pretty proud about it, looking down on others who don’t do these things.

@MaryJane
Yeah, but most places have sound and light ordinances, so these ideas might not fly.

None of these ideas are really okay, even with or without ordinances.

- Don’t leave your car windows unlocked hoping thieves move on.

- Don’t wire up a 3000dB airhorn to wake up everyone, because your neighbors will break your windows in anger. You’ll upset a lot of people.

- Don’t set up flashy cameras because intruders will just wear hoodies and spraypaint them.

These ideas might sound good to some people, but they don’t understand security.

I should have added /s. This sub is mostly about random things people think are threats, like hearing noises and thinking they’re being stalked.

You should have.

This forum is like any other, but I did find some good info, which made it worth sifting through all the nonsense.

What bothers me are the people who think they know it all. Like the person who bought a gun but never trained, and then talks about how they’ll use it during a home invasion. They might get killed one day because they believe their own bad advice.

Now I need to find the real forums where the experts hang out without all the junk.

@MaryJane
OP, 3000dB is really stretching it. A siren with 120-130 dB is plenty loud enough. Sirens aren’t about scaring thieves, they’re more about alerting you to take action.

But I agree with everything else you said.

@MaryJane
I’ve never heard of a 3000dB airhorn, and I’m sure it doesn’t exist.

The reason? Because it would be impossible. Just for context, the space shuttle launch was 195 dB.

A 3000 dB horn would not only scare someone off, it could potentially kill you and anyone nearby. You should really look up how sound pressure levels work.

Once you go over 165 dB, your organs start to feel like they’re going to explode.
