Do I need to go through ADT to replace the old smoke alarms, or is this something I can do myself? They are wired with three wires. They die when the power goes out, so I was looking into whether there is a backup battery that needs replaced, and instead realized the entire things are probably as old as the house and should be replaced.

If you have experience with electrical work, you can repair outdated wired smoke alarms on your own. Make sure you switch off the power before swapping them out. Seek for alarms that can be powered on during blackouts by a backup battery. For increased safety, think about switching to newer versions; however, if you’re confused about installation or wiring, get expert advice.
