Hi everyone, I have a situation with my neighbor who recently installed security cameras. One of them is pointed directly at my garden and bedroom. We have a high fence, but he installed the camera under his house roof, and I feel like he’s invading my privacy. When I asked him to show me the camera footage, he got angry and walked away, which makes me even more suspicious.
Does anyone have advice on how I can address this issue? Is it possible to check what the camera can see without his permission? I just want to avoid being under constant surveillance.
For context, this is in Czechia. Any legal advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!
It is likely illegal in Czechia to record someone else’s private property without their consent. You should try talking to your neighbor again. If that doesn’t work, report the issue to the local authorities or the Czech Office for Personal Data Protection (ÚOOÚ). But keep in mind, bad relations with neighbors can be a long-term headache.
Most security cameras allow masking to block certain areas from being recorded. You can ask the police to verify that your private spaces aren’t being recorded and ensure masking is applied. Avoid trying to access the footage yourself—it could escalate the situation.
Security cameras often have wide-angle lenses, so things far away might not be very detailed. If you’re more than 25 meters away, it’s unlikely the footage is clear enough to be intrusive.
Legally, your neighbor doesn’t have to show you the footage. However, if the camera is pointed intentionally at your property, it could be considered an invasion of privacy. If they refuse to cooperate, you could use a small barrier, like a sunshade, or consult legal help to address it properly.
You could install privacy film on your windows or hang a mirror facing the camera to deflect its view. If it persists, consider installing your own camera to cover your property and document their actions.
In Europe, this type of behavior is likely a violation of privacy laws like the GDPR. You can report it to the local data protection authority. If the authorities find a violation, they can fine the neighbor and force them to reposition the camera. Avoid escalating things yourself and consult legal advice.
