We have 4 children between the ages of 3 and 10 so they will eventually start using some of this stuff.

my honest assessment With 6 people all eventually needing internet at the same time you are probably right about needing the cat5 especially if it is a very large house or one that has a lot of wifi issues because of shape/materials. audio everywhere makes sense, it would create a nice ambiance You are on the right path in deciding what your must haves are. continue down that path, two categories, must haves and would be nice Somewhere on that patch panel there must be a calling card for who designed this. Call them and get them to come out and explain it. It’s worth doing just to understand what you have… talk to them and get them to explain. May take an hour and cost some $$ but it will be more valuable than anything you get on this forum. If not there are others (likely) in your area who will understand the panel instantly… whole businesses do nothing but this. Things to consider Internet sound/music/intercom video security lighting(i.e smart light type tech) IOT (i.e your water heater knowing it’s time to make more hot water because you will be up in an hour, or to cool down because everyone is gone for the day) there are a lot of options… all depends on you and how deep your pockets are. Good luck… somebody dropped some change on this networking closet… it was a big fad a decade ago, less pertinent now with Bluetooth and WiFi being so common but still valuable in large/complex buildings and houses. But you need someone with eyes on it… nobody on this forum can ‘know’ all the variables involved in your house. Have fun… think of it as a longish term hobby if you enjoy this sort of tech

Appreciate the response. We did call some people initially (more regarding the Lutron system) and some of the quotes we got seemed very high (more than $1k per room to get the speakers running). I do have some interest in tackling this myself but I am just beginning to learn more about the technology. I don’t need everything super automated and also don’t mind having separate apps for everything (e.g. lights, security). The original owners invested a lot into this about 20 years ago and had everything tied to AMX. Now I just need to figure out how to decentralized and make useful for the next 20 years.
@Carlos
yeah i get it that’s part of the problem with this type of tech it changes so fast but just the cat5 is valuable even in a complicated house you course cat5 to make WiFi available everywhere
