I’m thinking about installing a video surveillance system in my home and was considering Lorex, especially since it’s a division of FLIR. But after reading a bunch of reviews, I’m seeing a lot of mixed opinions, and now I’m not so sure. I’m also a little concerned that Lorex is owned by a Chinese company, and I try to avoid using software tied to the CCP. Could the bad reviews just be due to installation issues? Does anyone have experience with other PoE systems they’d recommend? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
I’ve used three different Lorex systems over the years, and honestly, I wouldn’t recommend them. Their customer service is terrible. If something goes wrong, don’t expect much help.

Appreciate the heads-up! That’s a bit concerning.

Totally agree. I had issues with their two-factor authentication, and I couldn’t get anyone on the phone to help.
I have a Lorex Fusion PoE system at my vacation property. It’s been fine for the most part. There are some things I don’t like about it, but for the price (about $500 for 4 cameras and the NVR), it does the job. I’ve had more expensive systems at other places, and honestly, they weren’t that much better. As for the China connection, I feel like most of the tech we use has some link to China at this point. If you’re really worried about privacy, you could just use the system locally and not connect it to the internet.

Thanks for sharing your experience!
I have a Lorex-branded camera and one from Dahua, which is from the same factory. The firmware on both is pretty bad, though if you’re using an NVR, the camera firmware isn’t as important. If you’re concerned about quality, you might want to look for cameras that follow the ONVIF standard. That way, you can mix and match different brands for your cameras and recorder, so you’re not locked into one ecosystem. Also, Lorex (Dahua) has been linked to human rights issues in China, so you might want to keep that in mind.

That’s really helpful. Thanks for the insight!
I bought a 12-camera Lorex system from Costco for $799 during Black Friday. Here’s what I didn’t like: the NVR only had one hard drive bay with a 6TB capacity, the night vision resolution wasn’t great, and my NVR failed after 3 years. But overall, I got my money’s worth. The cameras have held up well, even through hurricanes in Florida. I’m looking to upgrade to their 4K system soon. The setup was easy, and the mobile app works well. Just make sure you know what you’re getting for the price.

Thanks for the info, sounds like it held up pretty well!
Lorex is decent for a beginner-level DIY system. It’s not top of the line, but you get what you pay for.

Not sure I’d call it ‘cheap.’ A home system that costs over $1,000 is far from ‘cheap’ in my book. Maybe not professional-grade, but it’s still a significant investment.

Fair point, I guess it depends on your perspective.

I did my own install, and it was a lot of work. For the time and money spent, I had higher expectations.

I bought a Fusion NVR with 8 channels and 4 PoE cameras. I liked the doorbell camera at first, but connecting it to the NVR was a nightmare. Changes I made in the NVR settings didn’t seem to affect the cameras properly. Overall, I wish I’d gone with a different company. Here’s a Reddit thread about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Lorex/comments/xqsra7/lorex_failure/. Honestly, I just want to get rid of the whole system now.

The software is pretty basic, and there’s no Roku app, which is a bummer.

I’d recommend looking into Amcrest cameras. You can either use their NVR or set up a computer with recording software like Blue Iris (Windows), Security Spy (Mac), or Synology’s Security Station. It’ll cost a bit more, but you’ll get a much better experience.

Thanks! I’ll check those out.

I couldn’t log into the app, and customer service was no help. Avoid these products.

I bought a Lorex wireless camera system with 5 cameras and a hub. After 2 months, the batteries failed, and now the cameras won’t charge. Lorex isn’t honoring the extended warranty I bought. Don’t buy their battery-powered cameras.
