Building a home and prewiring for wired sensors to use with Alarm.com - best security system for my situation? Reconsidering the Qolsys

Forgot to mention, check out my smart home prewire guide aswell :slight_smile:

Thank you so much for the comment above and sharing the guide! I’ve seen it before (before the Canva move, looks great btw) and it’s so helpful!

Great tip on the Neo.

Do you have any recommendations for the wired contact sensors? I’ve narrowed things down to wanting something recessed / discrete like this Recessed Contacts | Tane Alarm Products

I understand I need to get the Normally Closed ones but still a bit confused on which size and which to pick. I searched a bunch for recommendations on wired sensors but couldn’t find much. If you have any advice, this would be a helpful addition to the guide!

Also re: the security keypad - just run 18/4 and they’ll communicate wirelessly to the main panel, right? None of them take Cat6?

@Aaliyah
Wired Sensors are pretty generic, a generic set of sensors should work from Amazon. Just tuck the other two conductors back in the wall and leave them there in case standards change. They have recessed sets on Amazon but Honeywell/DSC make some too. No big difference besides potential quality control things. Qolsys keypads use WiFi to communicate back to the main keypad if I’m remembering correctly. DSC/Honeywell use all the conductors for power + data. I’d still run CAT6 just in case something changes in the future with all this smart home tech becoming standard now.

@Nolan
Very helpful, thanks again. And good tip on the Cat6 just in case, I didn’t consider that but great point.

@Nolan
Hi - been reading again through the guide, so helpful!

Just a couple suggested edits I’ve found:

  1. On the ‘Home Automation’ page, the Everything Presence detector URL is broken, it’s changed to https://shop.everythingsmart.io/products/everything-presence-one-kit

  2. On the same page under Smart Locks, I think you meant to list the Schlage Connect instead of the Encode, the Encode is Wi-Fi. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KQY3MWL/ref=twister_B0B5MRN6V5?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

@Aaliyah
Thanks for the info! Appreciate it. The Encode has HomeKey while the Connect does not. Will fix the EP sensor when I have a chance.

Cool. Though the Encode is WiFi-based and you warn against that :slight_smile:

@Aaliyah
Yeah, personally I’m more of a Z-Wave / Lutron guy. Encode is on there cause of HomeKey support so it has a local API capable of being integrated different places. Kwikset also has a new Matter lock that may be worth looking at, haven’t had a chance to put it on there yet.
