Simplisafe and Ring are the top DIY systems people go for these days.
First off, congrats on the new house! Sorry about the rough start, but I get your concern. I had a similar experience and ended up investing in a great security kit that was affordable and easy to install. It gave me peace of mind, and I didn’t need any professional help, which saved a lot.

It constantly detects motion when there’s none. The cameras alert me multiple times an hour, and the backyard floodlight camera goes off whenever a bug flies by. The only thing that works well is the doorbell cam. Monitoring is cheap, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
